5 New Podcasts To Listen To

Welcome to the 32nd edition of Find That Pod.

Welcome new subscribers! Many thanks to all the new podcast submissions this week both through e-mail and twitter, keep them coming. Let’s get on with the show, shall we? Here are this week’s picks:

Ridiculous History

While human history can often be brutal and beautiful, it can also often bend towards being utterly ridiculous. This fantastic podcast aims to explore some of the weirdest and quirkiest stories from across modern human civilization. Humans are weird, don’t you know?

Sweating the Small Stuff

I’ve been twisting myself into a linguistic pretzel over the last few minutes trying to describe this podcast. It’s like if you threw in one part movie critique, one part science deconstruction, and one part clever and genuinely funny banter, and you stirred them together to form a perfectly snackable and enjoyable podcast that explores the science, stories, and misconceptions behind some of your favorite pop culture moments.

This is Uncomfortable

I’ve always been baffled by the culture of secrecy that surrounds money. And I’m not talking about the secrets employed by the ultra-wealthy to stash their money in tax shelters around the world. I’m talking about how you basically have no idea how much money your co-workers, your friends, your neighbors, and even family makes. It remains an oddly taboo topic in our society. That’s in-part what this terrific podcast from American Public Media is about.

It explores how money affects people’s individual lives, their relationships, and how it shapes identities and what it means to be an adult. A poignant and informative podcast I highly recommend.

Headlong: Missing Richard Simmons

For a while, fitness guru Richard Simmons (Gen Xers and older Millenials will remember him) disappeared. Well, sort of. This is the story of filmmaker Dan Taberski, a friend of Richard’s, and his search for Richard. The longer you listen, the stranger and more compelling this story get. An amazing piece of podcasting.

Death, Sex & Money

Continuing with the motif of shunning polite conversation, Death, Sex & Money is a podcast about those topics and others you normally don’t blurt out during the small-talk portion of day-to-day conversations. It talks about the hard choices in life. Relationships, family, money, work, sex, death.
