Find That Pod # 54

Five Great New Podcasts

Welcome to the 54th edition of Find That Pod!

Well, at least its a long weekend, right? In times like these, we have to hang on to the small niceties in life, lest we all go a little kookoo for Cocoa Puffs! That and podcasts cause podcasts are still lovely, and in these trying times, many podcasters have stepped up their game and are producing some of their best work.

In case you missed it last week, cause you were too busy to open this fine newsletter that I toil ever every week… ahem… approximately 40% of you… I went ahead and compiled all the shows I’ve recommended over the past year by category into this article: I Recommended 260 Podcasts Over the Past Year. They’re Here to Keep You Quarantine Company.

Stay strong, stay safe and stay home if you can.

Here are this week’s podcasts:

California King

Once upon a time, three men, some of which you may know, including my all-time-favourite podcasting personality Merlin Mann, made a show called You Look Nice Today. This was truly one of the more comedically brilliant podcasts ever made, and considering it was made all the way back in 2008 when a lot of you were still using goddamn iPods and Zunes, its sudden departure from the world of podcasting was mourned amongst its fans. Me included. Now they’re BACK! Yes baby, they’re back with a brand new show… in the same vein as YLNT, and this time they’re calling it California King. And as one reviewer put it, “In a time of darkness, it’s a little bright sunshine of absurdity, earnest humour, and for some reason just the right mix of voices to help me sleep at night”. If your sense of humour is as weird and absurdist as mine, you’ll love this.

Ashes Ashes

Ok, perhaps you’re tired of the COVID-19 news… but if you’re like me, you’re endlessly fascinated with apocalyptic scenarios. That’s what this well-produced podcast is all about. Each week this show takes on a new potentially apocalyptic scenario that may befall humanity in the coming decades. Cheerful stuff, no? Despite the gloomy nature of the topic, I urge you to have a listen, it’s a very thoughtful podcast that doesn’t oversensationalize the risks facing humanity, but rather examines them in a systematic approach.

Can I Pet Your Dog?

This once a week podcast hosted by two dog owners is dedicated to the canines in our lives, canine news (yes, there is such a thing) and what we can all do to be better dog owners. And really, if there’s one thing we can be sure of is that as humans, we truly don’t deserve the unconditional love these furry friends bestow upon us.

Dying for Sex

Perhaps you might think the premise of this podcast is a bit bizarre, but I actually found it both uplifting and entertaining. All you need to know is that host Nikki Boyer has a best friend called Molly. Molly has been unfortunately diagnosed with Stave IV breast cancer, but that definitely has not stopped her from embarking on a sexual awakening filled with adventures to help her feel alive and maximize her remaining time. And while you can definitely expect some raunch, what’s more fulfilling about this show is simply hearing the two women’s friendship evolve and grow as they talk about many topics including sex, death, healing, friendship, forgiveness and more.

Important, Not Important

My brain often feels like the one depicted in the artwork for this podcast. Squished with facts. But which ones are the important ones to remember? And which ones can make a difference to our lives and the lives of others. That’s in part what this podcast tackles. With conversations designed to get you thinking about how to as they pleasantly put it… bend the motherfucking arc of the universe towards a radically more livable planet for you, me and everybody else.
