This is Important

OUR RATING:

Picture this: four grown men who still find farts hilarious and can quote “The Lord of the Rings” with disturbing accuracy. If that doesn’t sound particularly appealing, give me a minute to explain.

This podcast features the creators and stars of “Workaholics” – Adam DeVine, Anders Holm, Blake Anderson, and Kyle Newacheck – reminiscing about their show and their lives with all the maturity of a middle school cafeteria table.

What makes this podcast particularly special is how it manages to be simultaneously completely chaotic and surprisingly well-structured. Each episode centers around a topic that one of the hosts deems “important” – though their definition of importance ranges from legitimate behind-the-scenes stories about “Workaholics” to extended debates about whether a hot dog is a sandwich. It’s like listening to a director’s commentary track, if the directors had all eaten too many Sour Patch Kids and recently discovered Red Bull.

The chemistry between these four is undeniable, which makes sense considering they’ve been friends and collaborators for over 15 years. Their conversations flow naturally from topic to topic, often derailing into tangents so wild that by the time they circle back to the original point, you’ve forgotten what they were talking about in the first place. It’s like watching a game of verbal ping-pong played by people who keep forgetting they’re supposed to use paddles.

One of the podcast’s greatest strengths is how it pulls back the curtain on the making of “Workaholics,” revealing the real-life inspirations behind some of the show’s most memorable moments. Turns out, many of their most outrageous plotlines were based on actual events, which should probably concern anyone who’s ever met these guys in real life. The stories about their pre-fame days as a sketch comedy group called Mail Order Comedy are particularly enlightening, if by “enlightening” you mean “concerning.”

The hosts have a peculiar talent for making even the most mundane topics entertaining through their unique brand of humor and storytelling. Whether they’re discussing their favorite gas station snacks or recounting near-death experiences (of which they have a surprising number), their enthusiasm and ability to find humor in everything is infectious. It’s like hanging out with the class clowns from high school, except they’ve somehow turned their inability to take anything seriously into successful careers.

What I’ve enjoyed most of all about this podcast is how it manages to capture the essence of long-term friendship. Between the inside jokes, the constant ribbing, and the genuine moments of nostalgia, listening feels like being part of their friend group – if your friend group happened to create and star in a successful Comedy Central show. Just be prepared for the fact that about 50% of their references will either be about “Lord of the Rings,” weed, or both.

For fans of “Workaholics,” this podcast is essential listening. For everyone else, it’s a hilarious glimpse into the minds of four guys who never quite grew up but somehow made that work for them. Just maybe don’t listen with your kids around, unless you’re ready to explain why these grown men are so fascinated with bodily functions and wizard movies.
